Rahm Makes Move at Spanish Open, Lowry Misses Cut
Madrid – Jon Rahm carded a 5-under 66 today, climbing the leaderboard at the Spanish Open, while Ryder Cup teammate Shane Lowry failed to make the cut.
Rahm’s round, featuring seven birdies, leaves him five strokes behind England’s Marco Penge, who leads at 67 after two rounds at the Club de Campo Villa Martin in Madrid. Yesterday’s opening 72 initially put Rahm behind, but today’s performance significantly improved his position. Lowry, fresh off his Ryder Cup victory for Europe, struggled with a 75 in the first round and, despite a 68 today, missed the cut by a single stroke.
Penge holds a one-shot advantage over a group including Denmark’s Jeff Winther, Switzerland’s Joel Girbach, and Canada’s Aaron Cockerill. Rahm currently sits tied for 18th as he attempts to surpass Seve Ballesteros’ record for most Spanish Open titles since the European tour’s inception in 1972. The Spanish Open is a significant event on the European Tour schedule, attracting top international talent.
Defending champion Angel Hidalgo also missed the cut, finishing at three over par. Rahm has previously won the tournament in 2018, 2019, and 2022, and was runner-up in 2023, demonstrating his consistent success in this event. Jon Rahm’s performance will be closely watched by fans hoping to see him continue his dominant form on home soil.
Play will continue Saturday with Penge looking to maintain his lead and Rahm aiming to close the gap.
