Rep. Nancy Mace Reportedly Berates Police at Charleston Airport
U.S. Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina allegedly used abusive language toward Charleston County Aviation Authority police officers at Charleston International Airport yesterday morning, according to an incident report.
The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. when officers were dispatched to escort Mace from the curb to her flight after being informed she had received recent death threats. Officers reported Mace was “very irate” and “loudly cursing,” repeatedly stating they were “f**king incompetent” and questioning whether U.S. Senator Tim Scott would have been treated similarly. According to the report, Mace also said, “this is no way to treat a f**king US Representative.” The congresswoman arrived at the airport in a dark gray sedan, differing from the expected white BMW.
Mace’s Director of Operations, Cameron Morabito, stated the congresswoman’s safety is taken “extremely seriously,” particularly following perceived threats, and characterized any attempt to politicize the situation as “dangerous and reckless.” Mace herself told The New York Times she complained to the airport due to concerns about her safety, stating, “We all get frustrated when it’s not taken seriously.” This incident comes as Mace is currently running for South Carolina governor, a race where public perception and security concerns can significantly impact a candidate’s standing.
Airport security video confirms Mace’s arrival and interaction with airport officials before officers arrived to provide an escort. Several TSA agents and an airline employee reportedly expressed shock and upset over Mace’s behavior after she boarded her flight. The Charleston County Aviation Authority has not released further comment.
The police department stated that any other individual exhibiting similar behavior would have prompted a dispatch and intervention, and the incident report has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities for review.
