Jacksonville Restaurants Offer Aid as SNAP Benefits Halt During Shutdown
Jacksonville, Florida – Restaurants across the First Coast are providing assistance to families facing hardship as SNAP benefits were suspended today, October 30, 2025, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, potentially impacting food security for thousands.
Maschall’s Kitchen, a six-month-old Afghan restaurant on Jacksonville’s Southside, is offering free meals to children. Owner Syed Hashimi, who opened the restaurant in memory of his father, stated, “My dad passed away 2.5 years ago, and I’m starting this restaurant as a tribute to him. We treat everybody like the guests are at home.” Hashimi noted a recent decrease in overall orders, but remains steadfast in his commitment to the community, saying, “People are starving.”
Several other businesses are also stepping up to help. Donatos Pizza is offering a 75% discount on pizzas to Florida EBT card holders, while Wicked Batter in Argyle Forest is giving away free birthday cakes throughout the shutdown. Pie Heaven Bakery Café in Atlantic Beach is specifically supporting military families affected by the shutdown, providing free chicken pot pies near Naval Station Mayport. For those seeking additional resources, the USDA’s SNAP website provides information on the program and potential assistance.
Delivery service DoorDash has launched an emergency food response, pledging to deliver one million free meals through food banks nationwide and waive delivery fees for 300,000 SNAP recipients’ grocery orders this November. Hashimi, whose family has operated businesses in Jacksonville for over 40 years, emphasized the importance of local support, stating, “We don’t have a lot to give, but what we have, we give it to our community.” Local food banks are also reporting increased demand.
Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and encourage businesses to reach out if they are offering assistance to those impacted by the shutdown.
