Kyiv and other areas of Ukraine were targeted by a barrage of Russian drones and missiles on Saturday, resulting in at least one confirmed fatality and dozens of injuries. The attacks, occurring as temperatures plunged below freezing, have left hundreds of thousands without essential utilities like power and heat, exacerbating the hardships faced by Ukrainian civilians this winter. This latest assault comes ahead of anticipated discussions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. president Donald Trump regarding potential pathways to end the ongoing conflict. A woman was killed and dozens more injured after a barrage of Russian drones and missiles struck Kyiv, Ukraine, and its surrounding areas on Saturday, December 27th. The attacks also left hundreds of thousands without power and heating as temperatures plummeted, highlighting the continued vulnerability of Ukraine’s infrastructure during the winter months.

According to reports from the news agency AFP, air raid alerts sounded for several hours as explosions rocked the city overnight, with some accompanied by bright flashes of light that turned the sky orange.

Mykola Kalashnyk, the governor of the Kyiv region, stated that the fatality was a 47-year-old woman.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that 19 people were affected in the capital, with eleven requiring hospitalization. He added that approximately 2,600 residential buildings, along with numerous kindergartens, schools, and social facilities, had lost heating.

“As of this morning, the left bank of the region remains without electricity. Currently, more than 320,000 consumers are without power,” Kalashnyk added.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced a nationwide air alert Saturday morning, stating that drones and missiles were detected over several regions of Ukraine.

The attacks came ahead of a planned meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday. The two leaders are expected to discuss a proposed plan aimed at ending the conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since 2022.

Russia has accused Zelenskyy and his European Union supporters of attempting to “sabotage” the U.S.-mediated peace plan.

The latest proposal, as outlined by Zelenskyy this week, is a 20-point plan that would halt fighting along the current front lines, while opening the possibility for Ukraine to withdraw troops from the east, where a demilitarized buffer zone could be established.
