Approximately 1,100 residents of Salzburg had their long-term blood sugar levels checked at pharmacies in mid-November as part of an initiative to identify potential diabetes risks early.

SALZBURG – The “HbA1c Action Week,” held from November 10th to 15th, involved around 50 pharmacies throughout the province. An evaluation of the results revealed that roughly 10 percent of the tests showed concerning values.

Two-thirds of those with abnormal results were found to be in the prediabetic range – indicating the body is already experiencing initial difficulties processing insulin. One-third of the concerning test results actually indicated existing, diagnosed diabetes. Individuals with abnormal results were immediately referred to physicians or appropriate outpatient clinics. Early detection of blood sugar issues is crucial for preventing the progression to full-blown diabetes and its associated health complications.

Pharmacies Report Positive Results

The Salzburg Chamber of Pharmacists emphasized the strong public interest in the preventative action. They noted that the straightforward checks offered an accessible service that reached many people. The province of Salzburg supported the initiative, which was scientifically overseen by the Paracelsus Medical Private University.

“Following the successful Vitamin D measurement campaign last year, this week of action by the pharmacies has also been very well received,” said Margarete Olesko, President of the Chamber of Pharmacists. “The strong participation of Salzburg residents in our preventative care offering demonstrates that we are hitting a nerve with our accessible health prevention services.”

Another focus week is already planned for the spring, this time on the topic of women’s health.
