Santiago, Chile’s metro system is preparing for a significant expansion with the planned Line 7, a project designed to dramatically improve transportation options for residents and ease congestion in the capital city. The new line will connect the eastern and western sectors of Santiago, offering a faster alternative to existing surface routes.

Line 7 to Cut Commute Times Nearly in Half

Currently, a trip between Renca and Vitacura can take up to 72 minutes using buses and other surface transportation. Once operational, Line 7 will reduce that commute to approximately 37 minutes – a nearly 49% decrease in travel time. This improvement aims to better connect historically separated areas and streamline daily commutes for residents.

New Metro Line Expected to Open in 2028

According to official information, Line 7 is scheduled to begin service in 2028. The project includes the construction of 19 stations that will integrate the metro network with the communities of Renca, Cerro Navia, and Vitacura. The new line will also provide strategic connections to Quinta Normal, Santiago, Recoleta, Providencia, and Las Condes, directly benefiting eight municipalities within the capital.

Station Locations Along the New Line

Stations will be strategically located along key roadways throughout Santiago, enhancing access to the city’s underground transportation system. Planned stops include intersections of Vicuña Mackenna and avenida Brasil; Vicuña Mackenna with José Miguel Infante; Salvador Gutiérrez with R. Petersen; Mapocho with Huelén; Mapocho with Neptuno; Mapocho with Radal; Mapocho with Walker Martínez; Mapocho with Matucana; and Mapocho with avenida Ricardo Cumming.

Line 7 will also feature key interchange points at Cal y Canto with lines 2 and 3; Baquedano with lines 1 and 5; Pedro de Valdivia with Line 1; and avenida Vitacura with Isidora Goyenechea, connecting to Line 6. The route continues through areas including Las Catalpas, Américo Vespucio, Alonso de Córdoba, Cerro Colorado, Rosario Norte, and various crossings of avenida Presidente Kennedy, including Padre Hurtado and Estoril.
