Flyers Defeat Panthers 5-2 in Home Opener, Led by Couturier’s Four-Point Night
The Philadelphia Flyers earned their first win of the season yesterday, defeating the Florida Panthers 5-2 in their home opener at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Sean Couturier led the Flyers with two goals and two assists, while Tyson Foerster, Bobby Brink, and Christian Dvorak also found the back of the net. Couturier’s game-winning goal came with 4:10 remaining in the third period, assisted by a skillful pass from Trevor Zegras. “Pretty exceptional,” Couturier said of Zegras’ assist, noting the forward’s ability to “see that” while battling two defenders. The victory marks a significant early boost for a Flyers team looking to improve upon last season’s performance.
Philadelphia’s Dan Vladar made 24 saves on 26 shots in his home debut, while Florida was without key players Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk due to injury. Head coach Rick Tocchet emphasized the importance of building confidence from this win, stating, “So to hang in there against that team, can we build confidence? Can we build an identity, a little bit of a swagger? Hopefully this can help us catapult to the next level, so we’ll see.” Emil Andrae also made his season debut, playing confidently after being called up from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and is hoping to earn a permanent spot on the roster. The Flyers’ penalty kill unit went 4 for 5 on the night, though Tocchet noted the team needs to reduce its penalty count, stating, “We can’t give up 15 penalties in three games.” The Flyers will practice Tuesday and Wednesday before hosting the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.
