Washington D.C. played host to a key meeting Friday between U.S. President Donald Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as the three nations navigate complex trade discussions alongside preparations for jointly hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum concluded a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday, describing the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders as “very good.” The meeting took place as the two countries navigate ongoing trade discussions and prepare to co-host a major international sporting event.

“Good, very good,” Sheinbaum responded when asked about the meeting following the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony. Sheinbaum and Trump, along with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, were all present at the event.

The Mexican president made the brief statement upon arriving at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington for a meeting with the Mexican community in the United States.

Sheinbaum was greeted outside the institute by supporters waving flags and banners, accompanied by a mariachi band, during her first trip to the U.S. capital since taking office.

Sheinbaum also shared her assessment of the meeting on social media, posting on X that the encounter with Trump and Carney was “excellent.” She noted they discussed “the great opportunity that the 2026 FIFA World Cup represents for the three countries and the good relationship” between them.

“We agreed to continue working together on trade issues with our teams,” she added.

Earlier Friday, the three leaders were together at the World Cup draw ceremony held at the Kennedy Center in Washington. The United States, Mexico, and Canada are jointly hosting the tournament.

Trump, Sheinbaum, and Carney jointly took the stage to draw the countries for the tournament, then sat together to watch the remainder of the event, engaging in conversation and laughter.

According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation CBC, the three leaders held a separate meeting lasting approximately 45 minutes after the draw concluded.

The meeting comes after Trump indicated Wednesday that he may allow the USMCA trade agreement with Mexico and Canada to expire, seeking a new trade deal with both countries. The former president stated that Mexico and Canada have taken economic advantage of the United States.

Despite those comments, Trump affirmed upon his arrival at the draw ceremony Friday that he has a “very good” relationship with both Sheinbaum and Carney.
