Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts lauded superstar Shohei Ohtani on Thursday, reiterating his high praise for the two-way phenom who played a pivotal role in the team securing back-to-back championships. Roberts also shared his expectations for Ohtani’s continued success.
Roberts was in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday to participate in a new advertising campaign launch event hosted by Mikata Group. He described Ohtani’s recent MVP award as “an unbelievable season,” expressing his excitement over the Japanese star’s ability to excel as both a pitcher and a hitter. Roberts revealed he immediately messaged Ohtani to congratulate him upon winning the MVP, and voiced his hope that Ohtani will achieve an unprecedented four consecutive MVP awards while leading the Dodgers to another championship.
Even after working closely with Ohtani throughout the season, Roberts couldn’t help but reiterate his admiration. “Shohei is a truly special player,” he said. “I don’t want to put a ceiling on what he can do, because he consistently breaks barriers. I believe he’s one of the greatest players in the history of the game – a complete player with all the tools. I expect him to win MVP again; he does things people can’t even imagine, like hitting a home run at Dodger Stadium in every game. He always delivers a special performance.”
Ohtani signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last offseason and immediately made an impact, posting a remarkable 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. This season, returning to his two-way role, Ohtani smashed a career-high 55 home runs, drove in 146 runs – leading the entire league – and finished with a .282 batting average, .392 on-base percentage, .622 slugging percentage, and a 1.014 OPS. As a pitcher, he made 14 starts, going 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 47 innings. He has now won the MVP award in two consecutive seasons prior to joining the Dodgers.
