Shubman Gill Survives Another Close Call as India Battles South Africa in T20 Series

Dharamsala: Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill narrowly avoided a second consecutive golden duck during the third T20 match against South Africa, leaving fans stunned. India, chasing a target of 118, sent Abhishek Sharma and Gill to the crease as openers.

With a modest target in sight, both batsmen appeared relaxed. Abhishek Sharma ignited the innings with a six off the very first ball from Lungi Ngidi, followed by three consecutive boundaries, racking up 16 runs in the opening over. India got off to a blistering start.

Marco Jansen took the ball for the second over and immediately challenged Gill, delivering a wide on his first ball. However, Jansen quickly recovered and nearly dismissed Gill on the next delivery, trapping him in front of the wicket. The umpire, Jayaram Madanagopalan, didn’t hesitate, raising his finger instantly. A collective gasp went through the crowd as Gill faced the prospect of another golden duck. But Gill immediately reviewed the decision.

What initially appeared to be a clear-cut out turned into a moment of relief for both Gill and the Indian dugout. The review revealed a slight edge off Gill’s bat before the ball made contact with his pad. The umpire’s decision was overturned, and Gill was given a reprieve. The close call added to the drama of the ongoing series.

Gill capitalized on his second chance, smashing the next ball for a boundary. He then added two more boundaries in the over from Ottneel Baartman and another in Jansen’s over, reaching 20 runs off 12 balls alongside Abhishek’s explosive start. Throughout his innings, Gill benefited from a bit of luck. However, Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal in the sixth over shifted the focus back to Gill.

Having scored 20 runs off his first 12 balls, Gill added just 8 runs from the next 16 deliveries. He attempted to play a more cautious, Test-match style innings, even trying to leave some deliveries, given the relatively small target. Gill was eventually bowled by Marco Jansen in the twelfth over for 28 runs off 28 balls.

Opening batsman Gill has faced criticism for his recent form, and his inability to fully capitalize on a pressure-free opportunity drew criticism from fans.
