$79 Million Investment to Repair Key New York City Roadways, Including the BQE
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced today a $79 million investment to repave and repair critical sections of major roadways throughout New York City, aiming to address deteriorating conditions and improve safety for commuters.
The funding will be allocated to projects impacting the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), the Long Island Expressway (LIE), the Cross Bronx Expressway, and several key city streets. Work will include full-depth pavement reconstruction, milling and resurfacing, and drainage improvements. The BQE, notorious for its potholes and aging infrastructure, will receive a significant portion of the investment. This comes as aging infrastructure across the country faces increasing strain from climate change and increased traffic volume.
“New York’s infrastructure is the backbone of our economy, and these investments will ensure that our roads are safe and reliable for all New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul stated. “This project will not only improve the daily commute for countless drivers but also support long-term economic growth.” The projects are expected to begin in early 2025 and be completed within the year, with work scheduled to minimize disruption to traffic flow. Officials emphasized the importance of proactive maintenance to prevent further deterioration and costly repairs down the line. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that every $1 invested in highway maintenance saves $5 to $6 in future repair costs. The Governor’s office indicated further announcements regarding infrastructure improvements are expected in the coming weeks.
