Montana Grizzlies Advance to Big Sky Soccer Championship After Dramatic Penalty Kick Victory
The University of Montana Grizzlies defeated the Idaho Vandals 3-1 in a penalty shootout today, advancing to the Big Sky Conference soccer tournament championship game for the first time since 2021.
The thrilling match, played at South Campus Stadium in Missoula, ended in a 2-2 tie after regulation and two overtime periods. Idaho initially took the lead in the ninth minute with a goal from Sara Rodgers, but Montana responded with goals from Eliza Bentler in the 24th minute and Reagan Brisendine in the 53rd. However, a last-second equalizer from Rodgers, assisted by goalkeeper Paula Flores, forced the game into a penalty shootout. Montana goalkeeper Ashlyn Dvorak proved crucial, saving two penalty kicks, while Brisendine, Maddie Ditta, and Bentler successfully converted their attempts.
Despite being outshot 16-11 and conceding eight corner kicks to Montana’s two, the Grizzlies persevered, with Dvorak recording eight saves throughout the game. This victory comes after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Sacramento State in last year’s tournament semifinal, adding to the emotional weight of today’s win. The Big Sky Conference is a stepping stone for teams hoping to compete in the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The Grizzlies (12-3-3) will now face No. 2 Weber State (12-6-1) in the championship final on Sunday at 1 p.m. at South Campus Stadium, having previously defeated the Wildcats 4-0 earlier in the season. Montana officials stated they are confident in their team’s ability to continue their strong performance.
