Nevada Drivers Face Steep Insurance Hikes After Speeding Tickets

Nevada drivers experience the third-largest car insurance rate increases in the nation following a speeding ticket, new data reveals, potentially adding hundreds of dollars to annual premiums.

A recent study found that the average annual premium in Nevada jumps from $2,789.85 to $3,663.39 after a single speeding ticket for exceeding the speed limit by 11 to 15 miles per hour – a 31.3% increase. This translates to an additional $873.54 per year, or approximately $73 per month. Over three years, a single speeding violation could cost drivers an extra $2,620 in insurance costs. This financial burden comes as insurance rates nationally have been increasing, impacting affordability for many drivers.

Younger drivers are particularly affected, with 20-year-olds potentially seeing premiums rise by more than $1,100 annually, compared to roughly $550 for older drivers. “Speeding isn’t just dangerous — it’s expensive,” said Rob Bhatt, a LendingTree auto insurance expert and licensed insurance agent. “Drivers with a speeding ticket are more likely to get into accidents, and insurers pass those higher crash risks onto drivers through steep rate increases.” You can find more information about understanding how speeding tickets affect insurance rates on NerdWallet.

The findings highlight the significant financial consequences of even minor traffic violations in Nevada, where speeding fines combined with increased insurance premiums can quickly become substantial. For more details on the study, visit LendingTree’s speeding ticket study.

Officials encourage drivers to adhere to posted speed limits to avoid both safety risks and escalating costs.
