Amidst increasing geopolitical tensions, the Swiss government has established a dedicated task force to address the growing threat of foreign interference. The initiative, announced Wednesday, follows a marked increase in cyberattacks earlier this year-including those coinciding with the Ukraine peace summit at Bürgenstock-and reflects a broader European trend of heightened security concerns [[2]]. This interdepartmental group will focus on countering disinformation, propaganda, and transnational repression efforts targeting Switzerland and its citizens.

The Swiss government announced Wednesday the formation of an interdepartmental task force to counter foreign influence and disinformation campaigns, as security concerns rise across Europe. The move comes after a surge in cyberattacks targeting Switzerland in June, coinciding with a high-profile summit on Ukraine held at Bürgenstock.

According to a government statement, these influence activities aim to manipulate perceptions and actions, both individually and collectively. Officials cited disinformation, propaganda, and transnational repression as tactics employed by certain states against Switzerland.

“Activities of influence aim to manipulate the perception, thinking and actions of both individuals and society. Some states are conducting such activities against Switzerland, in particular through disinformation, propaganda and transnational repression,” the statement reads.

The creation of the task force is intended to improve coordination and develop strategies to address these threats. Experts in the field have welcomed the announcement as a significant step forward.

“This working group is good news and should finally result in Switzerland having a real strategy,” said André Duvillard, a security expert and former delegate of the National Security Network. The development underscores the growing recognition of the need for proactive measures to safeguard against external interference.
