Switzerland secured a dominant 6:1 victory over Hungary in their opening test match in Biel on Thursday, April 23, 2026, marking national team head coach Jan Cadieux’s first home international win in just nine days on the job.

The Swiss took control early, jumping to a 3-0 lead within the first nine minutes through goals from Fabrice Herzog, Nicolas Baechler and Ken Jäger. Hungary managed to pull one back in the 15th minute via Istvan Sofron, but Switzerland responded with three more goals to seal the comfortable win.

Despite the commanding scoreline and a significant shot advantage of 31:10, Cadieux noted his team lacked consistency after the strong start. “The only really great part was the opening phase,” he said, acknowledging lapses in concentration that allowed Hungary to gain momentum midway through the game.

The victory represents a step toward stability for the Swiss national team following recent leadership changes. Cadieux, who served as Patrick Fischer’s assistant for the previous two seasons, emphasized his focus on supporting the players during this transitional period. “I’m concentrating on the boys and giving everything for this team,” he stated in his first media appearance as head coach.

Switzerland and Hungary are scheduled to meet again on Friday in Seeland for the second test match of the series.
