LOCAL NEWS

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is preparing the second edition of its Anatomy of a Homicide project. The report will look into local gun-violence incidents from 2021 through the end of this year. Sheriff Walt McNeil says the report serves as an important tool to understand who commits crime in our community and how to stop them before they start.

The Leon County Teachers Association has reached a “tentative agreement” with Leon County Schools.

LOCAL SPORTS

On Sep. 30, Wakulla High School hosted a three team, 9-hole format, boys golf tournament at Wakulla Sands Golf Club against Maclay and Lincoln. Lincoln won the tournament as a team by a margin of six strokes while breaking two school records.

FLORIDA NEWS

Escambia County did not violate students’ First Amendment rights in keeping from them a book about two male penguins raising a chick together, a federal judge found this week. 

Federal government attorneys Thursday urged a judge to reject certifying as a class action a lawsuit alleging that immigrants at a detention center in the Everglades are being denied proper access to lawyers.

NATIONAL NEWS

The US government may begin permanently firing federal workers—estimated to be in the thousands—as soon as today, as the government enters its third shutdown day. The firings would be in addition to the hundreds of thousands of workers who are typically furloughed during temporary closures (see overview). 

White House asks nine colleges to agree to “compact” banning race and gender in admissions, freezing tuition, and capping international enrollment in exchange for federal funds (More).
