Los Angeles Man Uses Freeway Sign to Search for Love, Goes Viral
A Los Angeles resident’s unconventional attempt to find a partner – a sign posted on a freeway overpass declaring “I’m single” – quickly gained widespread attention after being shared on TikTok.
Eric Jonas, who hadn’t used social media in six years, began posting videos on TikTok and realized the difficulty of finding connection in a world of endless options. He then conceived of using the freeway sign format, common for advertising services, to advertise himself. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I did the same thing, but was just funny about me?’” Jonas explained. He created a sign and placed it on the 101 Freeway in the Silver Lake area, opting for a $30 sign instead of a $30 monthly subscription to a dating app like Hinge.
The sign and subsequent video of Jonas standing near it quickly went viral, garnering numerous views and shares. “I stood up there for like two-and-a-half hours, and then people were honking like crazy,” Jonas said. “I woke up and then the video had like tons of views. I saw all these other videos of me, like, dancing.” While he hasn’t yet found a partner, the stunt has resonated with many, highlighting the challenges of modern dating. This creative approach to dating reflects a growing trend of individuals seeking unique ways to connect in an increasingly digital world.
Despite the attention, Jonas remains single, joking, “People are like commenting, ‘Are you still single?’ It was yesterday! Like, I didn’t have a boyfriend after 12 hours.” He expressed satisfaction with the positive impact his idea had on others, stating, “When I saw so many people being like, ‘This made my day! I saw you dancing, it was so fun, I love your energy.’ It just made them have a better day. That was awesome.” The Los Angeles Times has more on the story.
Jonas says he continues to be open to meeting people and is encouraged by the outpouring of support he’s received.
