A 13-year-old boy and another individual died in an incident involving domestic violence in Tomar, Portugal, authorities confirmed.
According to early reports, the incident began when a man, identified as the ex-partner of the boy’s mother, allegedly attacked the teenager with a bladed weapon at their home in Casais. The assailant then barricaded himself inside the residence with the child.
Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after, and an explosion occurred inside the home.
Investigators believe the man died by suicide using the same weapon he used to attack the boy.
Two other people were injured: the boy’s mother, 43, whose condition is currently unknown, and a member of the National Republican Guard (GNR) who sustained injuries from shattered glass during the explosion.
Authorities say the situation of domestic violence had been reported since 2023. The case underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing and preventing domestic violence.
The investigation has been turned over to the Judiciary Police.
