Trump Commutes Sentence of Former Rep. George Santos, Ordering Immediate Release

President Donald Trump commuted the prison sentence of former New York Congressman George Santos yesterday, ordering his immediate release from a federal facility in Fairton, New Jersey.

Trump announced the decision on his Truth Social account, stating that Santos “has been horribly mistreated” while serving less than three months of a seven-year term. Santos pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft related to his 2022 campaign, agreeing to the plea to avoid a trial. The former representative had been seeking clemency since Trump’s return to the White House in January, and received support from figures like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who formally requested a commutation from the Department of Justice.

The move drew swift criticism from several New York Republicans who previously voted to expel Santos from Congress. U.S. Rep. Nick LaLota stated, “George Santos didn’t merely lie — he stole millions, defrauded an election, and his crimes… warrant more than a three-month sentence.” Federal prosecutors detailed how Santos and his former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, submitted false financial reports to the Federal Election Commission, and that Santos fraudulently collected over $24,000 in unemployment benefits. Santos’ expulsion from Congress ultimately led to a special election where Republicans lost New York’s 3rd Congressional District seat to Democrat Tom Suozzi, shifting the balance of power in the House.

Santos confessed to fabricating portions of his resume and educational background throughout his political career. He was facing additional charges of embezzlement and lying to Congress, with a trial scheduled for September, but those charges will now likely be dropped. The White House has not indicated whether any conditions were attached to the commutation, and it remains unclear what Santos’ plans are following his release.
