Trump Announces Plans for Lower Ozempic, Wegovy Prices

President Donald Trump announced today that the price of Novo Nordisk’s weight-loss drug, Ozempic and its sister drug Wegovy, will be lowered through ongoing negotiations, potentially impacting millions of Americans who rely on these medications.

During a White House event focused on fertility treatments and drug pricing, Trump responded to questions from reporters about a specific drug he had mentioned would become more affordable. “I was referring to Ozempic, or — I was referring to — the fat loss drug?…. They’ll be much lower,” Trump stated. Novo Nordisk currently sells Ozempic for diabetes management and Wegovy specifically for weight loss; both contain the active ingredient semaglutide. The potential for lower prices comes as demand for these drugs has surged, leading to supply concerns and affordability challenges for many patients.

Trump indicated that his administration aims to reduce the price of the drug from approximately $1,300 to $150. While Ozempic currently lists for around $1,000 a month, Novo Nordisk offers a direct-to-consumer cash price of $499 per month. Dr. Mehmet Oz, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, clarified that the agency is still in the process of negotiating prices for GLP-1 drugs – a class that includes Ozempic – as part of the drug price negotiation program established by the Inflation Reduction Act. Novo Nordisk has not yet issued a comment regarding the President’s announcement. Officials stated that further details regarding the negotiation timeline and finalized pricing will be released as they become available.
