Pressure is mounting on United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he prepares to address his parliamentary group Monday regarding a controversy surrounding the appointment of former Labour politician Peter Mandelson as ambassador to Washington. Mandelson has links to the Jeffrey Epstein network.
Adding to the scrutiny, Anas Sarwar, leader of the Scottish Labour Party, has publicly called for Starmer’s resignation, refusing to allow what he described as the central government’s “failures” to impact Scotland. “I am not willing to sacrifice the Scottish National Health Service, our schools, our communities, our villages, towns, and islands to a third decade of SNP government,” Sarwar explained. “The leadership in Downing Street must change,” he concluded. While acknowledging accomplishments under the Starmer administration, Sarwar stated that they “are drowned out” by ongoing controversies.
Sarwar, who faces regional elections on May 7 – coinciding with local elections across the rest of the UK that are predicted to be difficult for the Labour party – is reportedly “furious,” according to the Independent, over the potential impact of the recent revelations on his electoral prospects. Labour had previously hoped to replace the Scottish National Party (SNP), which has been in power for 19 years, but now trails behind both the SNP and the populist right-wing Reform UK party in recent polls. Before Starmer’s leadership, Labour appeared poised to win the regional elections.
