Russian Forces Appear to Gain Control of Pokrovsk, Key Ukrainian Logistical Hub
Russian troops are believed to have gained control of Pokrovsk, a strategically important city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, potentially marking a significant advance in the ongoing conflict.
The battle for Pokrovsk has been escalating for over a year, with recent fighting spreading to city streets, according to military reports. Before Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Pokrovsk was a thriving industrial and transport hub with a population of approximately 60,000; that number has dwindled to around 1,500 residents. The loss of Pokrovsk threatens to further strain Ukraine’s supply lines in the east.
Military analysts suggest Russia has significantly increased its troop presence in the city over the past week, potentially numbering between 200 and 300 soldiers or more. “The more soldiers there are in the city, the more control Russia has over it,” stated Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Research Institute. Marina Miron, an honorary researcher at King’s College London, highlighted the critical issue of logistics, noting that Ukrainian troops are increasingly reliant on drone deliveries due to the dangerous situation, describing it as a “ticking time bomb” if supplies and evacuations are hampered. Further analysis of the conflict can be found at the Council on Foreign Relations.
While Ukrainian forces have not officially confirmed the city’s fall, Markus Reisner, a historian and colonel in the Austrian Armed Forces, indicated that Ukraine was likely attempting to buy time to establish a new defensive line beyond Pokrovsk and Kostyantynivka. Oleksandr Kovalenko, a Ukrainian military observer, told Reuters that this would be Russia’s first “operational-tactical” success since capturing Avdiivka, and a costly one at that. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been meeting with armed forces in Donbas to assess the evolving situation, as reported yesterday by Reuters.
Analysts are divided on what Russia’s next move will be, with some suggesting Putin may seek negotiations while others anticipate further offensives targeting cities like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
