Thousands Walk in Raleigh to Support Mental Health Research

Thousands of people participated in the 37th annual Walk for Hope in Raleigh today, raising funds for mental health research at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Psychiatry.

Walkers gathered at Angus Barn for a 5K route, followed by a family-friendly celebration featuring food, games, music, and prizes. The event, organized by the Foundation of Hope, has generated millions of dollars over its history to support research into conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, postpartum depression, schizophrenia, and anorexia. Increased funding for mental health research is crucial as rates of mental illness continue to rise across the country.

“I have been involved since the very beginning — for 41 years,” said Shelley Belk, Executive Director of the Foundation of Hope. “My mom and dad started this because my brother struggles with a severe bipolar schizoaffective disorder…It’s just something we’re incredibly passionate about, and we’re determined to make a difference.” Belk noted the foundation has funded over $11 million in research at UNC Chapel Hill, which has leveraged an additional $272 million in further funding. Community partners, such as Vets to Vets United, also participated to raise awareness and honor those lost to mental illness.

Belk expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and continued support, stating, “Everybody has a story, and I’m so grateful that now we’re reaching a place in this day and age where people are willing to talk about it.” Those unable to attend the event can still donate to the Foundation of Hope to support ongoing research efforts. Organizers say they are hopeful the funds raised will significantly contribute to advancements in understanding and treating mental health conditions.
