Taiwan Welcomes Major League Outfielder Stuart Fairchild Ahead of Classic Tournament

Stuart Fairchild, the lone Major League Baseball player on Taiwan’s roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, arrived in Taipei on Wednesday evening, February 26, 2026, and is set to join team training on Thursday, February 27, according to reports. The arrival of the outfielder has generated excitement as Taiwan prepares for the international tournament.

Manager Tseng Hao-Chun confirmed Fairchild’s arrival and outlined his immediate plans. “He’ll be here tonight and will participate in practice tomorrow,” Tseng said. However, due to MLB regulations, Fairchild will not be eligible to play in any exhibition games that are televised. He will need to participate in official warm-up games to be cleared for competition.

Upon arrival at Taoyuan International Airport around 9 p.m. Local time, Fairchild was greeted by a welcoming committee including Chinese Taipei Baseball Association President Tsai Chi-Chang, who presented him with the team’s mascot, “Ogo.” Chung-Hua Airlines ground staff also presented flowers to welcome the player.

Fairchild confirmed it was his first visit to Taiwan, smiling and waving to approximately one hundred fans who gathered to greet him. He graciously signed around ten baseballs for fans before departing.

Fairchild has appeared in 277 MLB games throughout his career, most recently playing for the Atlanta Braves in 28 games last season, where he maintained a .216 batting average. He recently signed a contract with the Cleveland Guardians and joined their spring training camp before traveling to Taiwan.

The team is also awaiting the arrival of another Taiwanese-American player, Long En, with both Fairchild and Long En expected to report for duty on February 28th, as announced by Tseng Hao-Chun.

Meanwhile, the team has addressed the withdrawal of another player, known as “Long Tsai,” due to injury. Tseng Hao-Chun stated that the team will select a replacement from among the players already in training camp, prioritizing the best available athlete.
