Montana Weather: Warm Trend to End This Week, Stormy Conditions Expected Sunday

A shift in weather patterns is anticipated for Montana, with a return to cooler, wetter conditions expected by Sunday after a pleasant stretch of warm, dry days.

Currently, upper-level ridging is maintaining high temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s through Friday, with overnight lows dipping into the 30s and 40s. Breezy conditions are present in the western foothills, particularly between Livingston and Nye, where southwesterly gusts could reach 20 to 35 mph. This warm spell is welcome news for agricultural producers nearing the end of harvest season.

Saturday marks a transition day as a weather system approaches from the west, bringing significant uncertainty to forecast details. However, by Sunday, cooler and wetter conditions are expected, with the most substantial precipitation targeting the mountains and foothills of southwestern and central Montana. There is a moderate chance of accumulating at least a quarter-inch of moisture in these areas, and snow levels will drop to around 6,000 feet. You can find more information about understanding weather forecasts from the National Weather Service.

The precipitation threat diminishes as it moves eastward across the Montana plains toward the Dakotas, falling to a 10 percent chance along the Montana-Dakota border. While the likelihood of significant snowfall – six or more inches – has decreased, mountain snow is virtually certain. For those planning outdoor activities this weekend, checking the latest conditions on our Montana Weather Alerts page is highly recommended.

Officials are continuing to monitor the developing system and will provide updates as the forecast becomes clearer.
