Los Angeles Celebrates Día de los Muertos with Citywide Events
Los Angeles is hosting a series of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebrations throughout the city and on university campuses, culminating in major events this weekend to honor deceased loved ones.
On-campus festivities include a celebration at the Latinx Chicanx Center for Advocacy and Student Affairs (La CASA) at the University of Southern California today, October 29th, from noon to 2 p.m., offering face painting, arts and crafts, and traditional foods like pan de muerto and champurrado. Viterbi Well at USC is also hosting a community altar in Ronald Tutor Hall from October 30th to November 6th, encouraging students to contribute marigolds and reflections. These events provide a space for students to connect with their heritage and process grief.
Off-campus, the 52nd Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration will take place at East L.A. Civic Center Park on November 1st, featuring traditional dance, community ofrendas, and live entertainment, with a procession beginning at 2 p.m. Downtown, Gloria Molina Grand Park’s annual Día de los Muertos exhibition, open until November 2nd, showcases 19 ofrendas by local artists and organizations, culminating in a Noche de los Muertos celebration on Sunday, November 2nd, headlined by Latin GRAMMY nominee Lupita Infanta. For those seeking a more historic experience, Olvera Street will host its annual festival through November 2nd, including performances by Teatro del Barrio and community ofrendas. Further afield, the Eagle Rockdale Community Garden & Art Park will host a celebration on November 2nd from noon to 5 p.m.
Día de los Muertos is a significant cultural tradition with roots in indigenous Mesoamerican beliefs, and its growing popularity reflects increasing recognition of Latine culture in the United States. Event organizers encourage attendees to register in advance where applicable, with details available on Eventbrite and Engage SC. Officials anticipate large crowds and encourage attendees to plan accordingly.
