Polar Launches Loop Fitness Band, Challenging Smart Ring Market
A new fitness band from Polar, the Polar Loop, is now available, offering a distraction-free approach to health and wellness tracking without the need for a subscription – a direct competitor to popular smart rings like those from Whoop.
The Polar Loop, released today, features a comfortable fabric band and a small module weighing just 29 grams, and is available in three colors for $199.99. It utilizes Polar’s Generation 3.5 optical heart rate sensor and accelerometer to track heart rate, steps, sleep, Training Load Pro, and inactivity. While the band lacks built-in GPS, it can sync location data from a paired smartphone during outdoor activities. The rise of these dedicated fitness trackers signals a growing consumer desire for focused health data without the broader functionality – and potential distractions – of a smartwatch.
Testing indicates the Loop’s heart rate and calorie burn measurements closely match those of more advanced smartwatches, though activity timing can be slightly off due to automatic detection starting and stopping points. The device automatically detects activities, categorizing them as “Indoor” or “Outdoor” which can be manually adjusted for accuracy. Polar recommends reading their Polar Journal for more in-depth information on the new device. The band boasts a week-long battery life and connects to smartphones via Bluetooth. Despite its capabilities, the Polar Loop does not include an alarm feature or a skin temperature sensor, and its accompanying app is currently geared towards training guidance rather than overall wellness. Polar officials stated major updates to the app are in development to address this, aiming to provide a more holistic health tracking experience.
