Aces Dominate Mercury, Move Two Wins From WNBA Championship
The Las Vegas Aces are two victories away from securing their third WNBA championship in four years after defeating the Phoenix Mercury 91-78 yesterday, taking a 2-0 lead in the WNBA Finals.
A’ja Wilson led the Aces with 28 points in Game 2, while Chelsea Gray contributed a game-high 10 assists, building on her strong performance from Game 1 where she also recorded 10 assists. The Aces overcame a challenging start to the season, improving from an 8-8 record at the end of June, and Gray credits a candid relationship with Wilson for her improved play. “Our relationship is super honest and raw. I’ve cried in front of her. She’s cried in front of me,” Gray said. “It’s that kind of bond where we can have conversations in the middle of the game, and we understand where we’re coming from.”
Wilson reportedly encouraged Gray to embrace a leading role as the team’s primary assister during their mid-season slump, a challenge Gray has met with success in recent months. This dynamic is proving crucial as the Aces pursue another title, a feat only accomplished by a handful of teams in WNBA history. Wilson also highlighted Gray’s calming influence during their playoff series wins against the Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever, stating, “She’s always going to be her true self, and it allows you to be your true self… She’s calm through the storm. I’m so grateful for her to be our point guard.” You can find more information about the WNBA and its teams on the official league website.
Game 3 of the WNBA Finals is scheduled for Wednesday at PHX Arena in Arizona, followed by Game 4 on Friday at the same venue, where the Aces could potentially clinch the championship. The Aces shared a team photo preparing for the upcoming games.
