Carrie Romney, Sister-in-Law of Former Senator Mitt Romney, Found Dead in California

Carrie Elizabeth Romney, the sister-in-law of former Utah Senator Mitt Romney, was found dead near a shopping mall in Santa Clarita, California yesterday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida stated that investigators responded to the 24000 block of Town Center Drive, near the Valencia Town Center shopping mall, around 9 p.m. on October 13, 2025. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with initial speculation suggesting a possible fall or jump from a five-story parking structure. Ms. Romney, 64, was a resident of Valencia.

The L.A. County medical examiner has deferred a cause of death pending further investigation, including toxicology tests which could take months to complete. Carrie Elizabeth Romney was married to G. Scott Romney, an attorney and older brother of the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 presidential nominee. Mitt Romney served as a U.S. Senator for Utah from 2019 to 2025, and his family has maintained a prominent public profile throughout his political career.

This incident comes as the Romney family continues to navigate the public sphere following the senator’s recent departure from office. The medical examiner’s office is continuing its investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.
