Wyoming Valley Challenger Baseball Team Receives Recognition in Harrisburg
The Wyoming Valley Challenger baseball team, celebrated for their inspiring performance at the Little League World Series, was honored today with a visit to the Pennsylvania State Capitol and a meeting with Governor Josh Shapiro.
Governor Shapiro welcomed the team to his reception room, stating, “My name is Josh. I’m your governor, and I’ve been so excited to meet you… I just want you guys to know how important you are.” The team received a bipartisan welcome from state legislators in both the House and Senate, following their participation in the Challenger exhibition game in South Williamsport this summer. The Challenger Division, founded in 1989, provides opportunities for individuals with physical or intellectual challenges to play baseball, and the Wyoming Valley league has grown significantly in recent years – from 25 members six years ago to approximately 140 players today.
State Representative Jamie Flick, representing parts of Lycoming and Union counties, initiated the visit, emphasizing the team spirit inherent in baseball. “You can’t hit a grand slam… you can’t hit a two-run homer without somebody else getting on base,” Flick said, drawing a parallel to the bipartisan support the team received. The team’s story highlights the growing movement towards inclusive sports programs, as detailed by Little League’s Challenger Division resources. Speaker of the House Joanna E. McClinton also acknowledged the team’s accomplishments during a House session.
Governor Shapiro also proposed hosting a Wiffle ball tournament at the Governor’s Residence and presented a bat from the upcoming 2026 Major League Baseball All-Star game in Philadelphia to the team. The visit underscored a sense of belonging and acceptance for the players and their families, with one parent noting the experience demonstrated “there aren’t limits.” Officials indicated they hope to continue supporting the team and promoting inclusive opportunities for athletes of all abilities.
