Following the launch of its SU7 and YU7 models, the company is now road-testing its third innovative vehicle, currently known as the YU9. This large crossover SUV signals Xiaomi’s commitment to establishing a significant presence in the competitive electric vehicle (EV) market. The YU9 is expected to be the brand’s largest vehicle to date, and is undergoing extensive performance and durability testing in the challenging terrain of China’s mountainous regions.

Xiaomi CEO Shares Impressions from Demanding Mountain Routes

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun has shared images on social media showcasing the camouflaged YU9 prototype against the backdrop of the Tian Shan mountain range. Jun noted that his testing team has tackled the Panlung Road, a 30-kilometer route featuring over 600 hairpin turns and climbing to an altitude of over 3,500 meters. This notoriously difficult road is considered a severe test for any vehicle in China, demonstrating a high degree of confidence in the YU9’s capabilities and the work of Xiaomi’s engineering team.

Extreme Tests Conducted on the Palmir Plateau and Beneath High Peaks

Testing isn’t limited to the Panlung Road. The team is also working at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains, on the Pamir Plateau, where the average altitude exceeds 4,000 meters. Approximately 20 Xiaomi engineers are monitoring the YU9’s durability, charging speed, and resistance to intense ultraviolet radiation at these high altitudes. The team also visited Karakul Lake, situated around 3,600 meters near Muztagh Ata peak (7,500 m). These extreme conditions are designed to ensure the vehicle can operate reliably in any environment, reinforcing its overall quality.

Early Insights into YU9 Dimensions and Potential Powertrain

While official specifications and a formal name have yet to be released, preliminary information suggests the Xiaomi YU9 will measure over 5.2 meters in length and approximately 1.8 meters in height, classifying it as a large D-segment crossover SUV. This makes it noticeably larger than the SU7 and YU7, leading to speculation that it will become the brand’s flagship model. Leaked photos suggest the vehicle may feature a hybrid powertrain with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) system. This combines powerful electric motors with a small internal combustion engine acting as a generator for continuous power. According to leaked information, the YU9 EREV version will include an 80 kWh battery, offering over 400 kilometers of all-electric range, with a total range expected to exceed 1,000 kilometers.

Interior Design and Autonomous Driving Capabilities

Details regarding the interior design remain limited, but some images indicate the YU9 may offer a different cabin architecture compared to the dual-screen design of the SU7. Prototypes have been spotted both with and without LiDAR sensors, suggesting potential variations in autonomous driving system configurations. This aligns with Xiaomi’s active development of its Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) solutions, potentially based on its proprietary Pilot system. Deutsche Bank forecasts the launch of a large hybrid D-class SUV in 2026, which aligns with the characteristics of the YU9.

Anticipated Debut and Project Significance

Although an official launch date has not been announced, given the intensive testing underway since the summer of 2024, a public debut could occur in early 2026. Activity in Xinjiang province indicates the project is nearing completion. Several key Xiaomi Auto executives – including Chief Auto Consultant Hu Zhennan, Vice President Zhang Jianhui, and Head of Auto Product Yu Kai – have been observed at the test sites, suggesting an expanded testing format similar to that preceding the launches of the SU7 and YU7. Xiaomi has not yet officially confirmed the YU9 name, final specifications, or launch date, but these high-altitude tests are a clear indication that the company is preparing to enter the crossover segment with a powerful and innovative electric vehicle.
