93-Year-Old Yoga Instructor Shares Secrets to a Long, Active Life
Salomon Delgado, a 93-year-old yoga instructor in Los Angeles, California, has become a local sensation for his dedication to fitness and well-being, inspiring students of all ages with his vitality and wisdom.
Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Delgado moved to Los Angeles in 1959 and has since held various careers, including chef, graphic designer, and health food store owner. He began practicing yoga in his mid-30s, earning his teaching certification in 1972 and eventually opening his own studio, Scientific Yoga, to emphasize the mind-body connection. Today, Delgado leads daily classes at a 24 Hour Fitness flagship location, drawing a loyal following. His classes incorporate gentle stretches, sun salutations, balance exercises, breathwork, and meditation.
Despite being in his nineties, Delgado maintains excellent health, managing minor concerns like poor eyesight and high blood pressure with a pacemaker. He credits his longevity to a pescatarian diet followed for 45 years, consistent hydration, daily meditation, and, most importantly, regular movement. “It’s very important: no matter how old you are, you need to move,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “Or you become totally an invalid. Even the little bones in your hands and feet. Move.” Delgado also holds certifications in Pilates, aerobics, and senior fitness, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of movement science. Delgado has no plans to retire, stating, “I need to teach my class…What am I going to do?” He encourages others, particularly seniors, to find meaningful activities to stay engaged, suggesting volunteering as a way to maintain purpose.
