Five More Arrested in Louvre Crown Jewels Theft; Treasures Remain Missing

Paris – Five additional individuals were arrested late yesterday in connection with the brazen theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum, though the valuable artifacts remain unrecovered, authorities announced today.

The arrests, made in Paris and the surrounding region, bring the total number of people detained in the investigation to seven. Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau told RTL radio that one of those arrested is suspected of directly participating in the October 19th robbery, describing the individual as “one of the objectives of the investigators — we had him in our sights.” The others, she added, “may be able to inform us about how the events unfolded.” Two men, aged 34 and 39, were charged Wednesday with theft and criminal conspiracy after nearly four days in custody, offering only “minimalist” statements and “partially” admitting involvement, according to Beccuau.

The theft, which took less than eight minutes, saw thieves force open a window and use power tools to access display cases, making off with eight pieces of the French crown jewels valued at approximately 88 million euros (roughly $102 million). Among the stolen items was a diamond-and-emerald necklace gifted by Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Marie Louise. The loss represents a significant blow to France’s cultural heritage and has prompted a major security review of the museum’s procedures. Experts like Parisian gem appraiser Stephen Portier believe the thieves will face significant challenges in selling the jewels, stating, “The whole world knows about this robbery…dealers will have pictures of every single piece up in their offices.” He added that attempting to recut the gems would drastically reduce their value. Investigators currently see no evidence of internal involvement from Louvre staff, but are not ruling out the possibility of a broader network. Authorities continue to appeal for any information that might lead to the recovery of the stolen jewels and the apprehension of all those involved.

Prosecutor Beccuau stated that the investigation is ongoing and officials are pursuing all leads to recover the stolen treasures.
