Winter Storm Threatens Travel Across Japan, Temperatures to Fluctuate

A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow and blizzard conditions to parts of Japan during a three-day weekend, prompting travel warnings and potential disruptions. The storm is expected to impact transportation networks across the country, with significant snowfall predicted in several regions.

The Kantō-Koshin region is facing the possibility of “warning-level heavy snow,” with forecasts predicting up to 50 centimeters of snow in the Shin’etsu region and 40 centimeters in northern Kantō. These predictions cover snowfall expected through 6 a.m. on January 12.

Strong winds and high waves are also a concern, particularly in the Kansai region, including Osaka, where transportation could be significantly affected. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution.

NEXCO East Japan has announced the possibility of preemptive road closures due to the heavy snow, advising travelers to reconsider their routes and schedules. The company issued the announcement at 9:00 a.m. on January 10.

While temperatures are currently rising nationwide, a cold front is expected to move in from the west on January 11, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. This fluctuation adds to the complexity of the weather situation and the potential for hazardous conditions.

The anticipated snowfall and icy conditions are likely to cause significant travel delays and disruptions, impacting both road and rail transportation. The storm underscores the challenges of winter travel in Japan, where heavy snowfall is common.
