Glenville State Pioneers Prepare for Homecoming Clash with Concord After Upset Victory

Glenville State University’s football team will host Concord University this Saturday, October 18th, for their homecoming game at Nicholas County’s Memorial Stadium following a stunning double-overtime victory against Frostburg State.

The Pioneers (3-3, 2-1) are seeking a third consecutive win after defeating then-No. 21 Frostburg State 19-13. Jeremiah King, who rushed for 100 yards on 23 carries, scored the game-winning touchdown and was named the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Head Coach Mike Kellar praised the team’s intensity, stating, “I thought our intensity was phenomenal…our three safeties have been the strength of the team.” Glenville State limited Frostburg State to just 3 of 19 conversions on third down.

Concord (2-4, 1-3) is coming off a 28-21 loss to West Virginia State, where quarterback Tyler Mizzell connected with Damani Burrell for a school-record 95-yard touchdown. The matchup features contrasting offensive styles, with Concord favoring a passing attack led by Mizzell, who ranks seventh nationally with 1,696 passing yards, while Glenville State aims to establish their running game with King, currently tied for 27th in the nation in rushing yards per game. Defensive play will also be key, as Concord boasts a strong secondary with Corey Radcliff’s five interceptions tying him for second in Division II. Glenville State safety Sean Scott was named the Mountain East Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Frostburg State, recording 12 tackles and two pass breakups. This victory for the Pioneers demonstrates the growing competitiveness within the Mountain East Conference, and a win on Saturday would further solidify their position. Brandon Penn, a Parkersburg South graduate, leads the Pioneers in tackles, averaging a Division II best 7.17 solo tackles per game, as reported by News and Sentinel.

The game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Coach Kellar emphasized the importance of maintaining focus, stating, “We’re not good enough…to just show up and win ballgames.”
