Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted Leaks Ahead of Launch, Faces Early Criticism

The highly anticipated remake, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, has unexpectedly leaked online today, October 17, 2025, revealing a number of technical issues and sparking disappointment among fans eager for a return to the classic tower defense gameplay.

The leak originated through the EA app, with some individuals even streaming gameplay prior to the official release date. Reports indicate the game appears to be a Unity re-implementation of the original Windows Phone version, a decision that has raised questions within the community. This choice in development path may be contributing to the reported bugs and performance concerns.

Early players have noted issues with AI up-scaling, alongside a general sense that the game feels unpolished. The original Plants vs. Zombies, released in 2009, became a cultural phenomenon and launched a successful franchise, so expectations for this remake are understandably high. Fans are hoping these issues are addressed quickly, as the game is scheduled to launch on October 23 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. You can view the official launch trailer here.

EA and PopCap have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the leak or the reported problems, but are expected to release patches and updates following the official launch. For more information on the history of the franchise, visit the Plants vs. Zombies Wikipedia page.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted has leaked, and after some early hands-on time, fans have come across various issues.

The game won’t be out for a few more days, but the leak took place over on the EA app. One person has even been streaming the title. Unfortunately, the reception hasn’t been great so far.

Many of the initial issues could be by the manner in which EA and PopCap decided to build the base for Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted. Strangely, it seems to be a Unity re-implementation of the Windows Phone version, according to reports. Why the team decided to go down that path is perplexing for many.

Perhaps because of the decision to reuse the Windows Phone version as the base, we’re hearing that it’s littered we’re bugs. Hopefully that’s something EA will patch later on if not close to launch. We’ll also mention that AI up-scaling is used – though again, the reception there has been mixed.

Plants vs. Zombies fans have been excited about the Replanted release as we haven’t really seen the game in many years, so what’s been floated out there so fan has been disappointing. If you do want to pick it up, you can do so on October 23 for Nintendo Switch 2 or Switch – a new launch trailer is up here.
