Essex Mental Health Inquiry Establishes Forum to Enforce Recommendations

A public inquiry examining over 2,000 deaths at NHS inpatient units in Essex has today established a unique forum designed to ensure its recommendations are implemented, a move believed to be unprecedented for a UK public inquiry.

The Lampard Inquiry, investigating deaths between 2000 and 2023, has created a “recommendations and implementation” forum that will convene after the inquiry concludes. This forum will actively solicit input on how the recommendations made by Baroness Lampard can be put into practice to drive “meaningful change,” according to the inquiry. This step is particularly significant given growing concerns about the quality of mental healthcare provision in the UK.

“As far as we are aware, the Lampard Inquiry is the first public inquiry ever to have taken such an important innovative and collaborative step,” stated Nicholas Griffin KC, chief counsel to the inquiry. The forum aims to move beyond simply issuing reports and instead proactively work towards systemic improvements within the NHS. You can find more information about public inquiries on the UK government website.

The inquiry’s focus on ensuring accountability and lasting change comes as families of those who died have long called for greater transparency and improved patient safety within Essex’s mental health services. Further details regarding the composition and operation of the forum will be released following the inquiry’s final report; you can follow updates on the inquiry’s progress on the official inquiry website.
