Paris Marks 10 Years Since Deadly 2015 Terror Attacks

Paris today commemorated the 10th anniversary of the coordinated terrorist attacks that killed 132 people and wounded hundreds more, reshaping France’s security landscape and leaving lasting scars on the nation.

The attacks unfolded on the evening of November 13, 2015, beginning with suicide bombings outside the Stade de France during a soccer match, followed by shootings at cafés and restaurants, and culminating in a brutal siege at the Bataclan concert hall where 90 people were murdered. President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron led a day of tributes, beginning with a wreath-laying and a moment of silence at the Stade de France, where Manuel Dias was the first victim killed. “Ten years. The pain remains,” Macron wrote on X, remembering the lives lost.

Sophie Dias, Manuel’s daughter, spoke tearfully outside the stadium, describing the “void that never closes” left by her father’s death. “We are told to turn the page,” she said, “But the absence is immense, the shock is intact and the incomprehension remains. I’d like to know why, I’d like to understand. I’d like these attacks to stop.” Tributes continued throughout the day, tracing the path of the attacks to the various café locations and finally to the Bataclan, where families of the victims were given priority access to memorial ceremonies. The attacks prompted France to implement sweeping counterterrorism measures and sparked ongoing debate about balancing security with civil liberties; you can learn more about France’s response to terrorism here.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned today that the terrorist threat remains “very high,” though officials believe a large-scale coordinated attack like the one in 2015 is less likely. A new “November 13 Memory Garden” was inaugurated opposite City Hall, featuring granite blocks engraved with the names of the victims. Officials emphasized the importance of remembering the victims, honoring the responders, and preserving the everyday joys the attackers sought to destroy.
