Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy Opens Applications for 2026
Applications opened today for the Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy, an eight-month incubation program designed to support aspiring entrepreneurs in the skilled trades.
The program, starting in mid-April 2026, will provide comprehensive training and resources to individuals looking to launch businesses in bricklaying, carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing. Participants will receive a monthly transport allowance of R3,000 to assist with program attendance costs. This initiative aims to address the critical need for skilled tradespeople and foster economic growth within these sectors.
To be eligible, applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old and possess a qualification in one of the specified trades – either a trade test, three years of work experience, or an N2 Certificate combined with three years of experience. A National Senior Certificate is advantageous but not required. Required documentation includes proof of qualifications, work experience, and a certified copy of identification; further details on the application process can be found on the Allan Gray Makers StartUp Academy website.
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has a long history of supporting entrepreneurship in South Africa, and this program builds on that commitment by specifically targeting the often-overlooked artisan sector. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply promptly, as the deadline for submissions is January 30, 2026. For more information on entrepreneurship support, visit Small Business Digest.
Officials stated that the program seeks to empower individuals with the skills and resources necessary to build sustainable businesses and contribute to the South African economy.
