Amazon Launches Pharmacy Kiosks in Select One Medical Locations
Amazon is rolling out self-service pharmacy kiosks at its One Medical offices, allowing patients to fill prescriptions immediately following their appointments.
Beginning in December, the kiosks will initially be available in downtown Los Angeles, West LA, Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and West Hollywood, with plans for a broader rollout to other One Medical locations by 2026. The automated machines will stock hundreds of commonly prescribed medications, including antibiotics, inhalers, and blood pressure treatments, as well as seasonal medications for flu and allergies. Patients will access the kiosks by scanning a QR code through the Amazon app after their provider sends the prescription to Amazon Pharmacy and payment is completed within the app.
“We know that when patients have to make a separate stop after seeing their doctor, many prescriptions never get filled,” said Hannah McClellan, vice president of operations at Amazon Pharmacy. “By bringing the pharmacy directly to the point of care, we’re removing a critical barrier and helping patients start their treatment when it matters most—right away.” This move aims to improve medication adherence, a significant issue in healthcare costing billions annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Amazon launched Amazon Pharmacy in 2020 and acquired One Medical in February 2023, expanding its presence in the healthcare sector. The introduction of these kiosks comes as traditional pharmacy chains, like Rite Aid, face increasing challenges. Amazon officials stated they see potential for expanding this technology to other healthcare environments in the future.
The company plans to continue adding medications to the kiosks and expanding their availability based on patient needs and demand.
