American Airlines Now Supports Google Wallet for Boarding Passes

American Airlines announced today that it will begin supporting Google Wallet for digital boarding passes, offering customers a more convenient way to manage their travel documents.

Previously, travelers had to rely on screenshots of their boarding passes within Google Wallet, lacking the integrated features offered with Apple Wallet support. The airline stated, “Customers using Google Wallet will now be able to add their boarding pass to their Google Wallet for easy access during their travel day,” and will also receive flight updates directly within the app. This addition brings American Airlines in line with many other major carriers and provides a more streamlined experience for Android users.

The update comes alongside broader improvements to the airline’s digital experience, including enhanced Apple Wallet integration that automatically adds boarding passes upon check-in through the American app. American Airlines is also investing in new AI-powered tools for flight itinerary planning and 3D maps of aircraft interiors, signaling a commitment to leveraging technology to improve customer journeys. Digital boarding passes have become increasingly popular since their introduction, reducing reliance on paper and streamlining the airport security process, as detailed by the Transportation Security Administration.

Officials indicated that the Google Wallet integration is now live and available to customers, with further enhancements planned as part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to reimagine the customer experience.

American Airlines has just announced that it will support Google Wallet with its boarding passes, an overdue addition for the major airline.

Google Wallet has supported boarding passes for flights since before it was even called Google Wallet. Yet, some airlines essentially ignored Google’s offering, even while supporting Apple Wallet. One of those airlines was American, but that’s changing as of today.

In a press release, American Airlines has announced that, finally, it will offer Google Wallet support.

Customers using Google Wallet will now be able to add their boarding pass to their Google Wallet for easy access during their travel day. To make the travel day even more seamless, customers will also receive flight updates when adding their boarding pass to Google Wallet.

Prior to this, Google Wallet worked around the lack of support by allowing fliers to take a screenshot of their boarding pass and add it to Wallet, but that didn’t always include deeper integration such as flight updates.

This also comes as American is further upgrading Apple Wallet support with the ability to automatically add the pass to Wallet upon check-in through the American app. The broader press release where this was announced was primarily focused on “reimagining the customer experience” with new AI tools for finding flight itineraries as well as 3D maps showing the interior of some planes.
