Los Angeles County to Auction Angels Landing and Bethune Library Properties
Los Angeles County is moving forward with plans to sell two publicly owned properties – the Angels Landing site in Rancho Palos Verdes and the former Bethune Library in Watts – opening them up for potential redevelopment.
Yesterday, the County Retirement Association (CRA) and the Los Angeles County Internal Services Department (ISD) announced the properties will be offered for sale, with proposals accepted beginning November 15th. The Angels Landing site, a 16.6-acre parcel with ocean views, has been the subject of previous development debates, while the Bethune Library, a 1.2-acre lot, has remained vacant for years. This decision comes as the county seeks to optimize its real estate assets and generate revenue.
According to official county documents, the goal is to solicit proposals that align with community needs and maximize the return on investment for the Los Angeles County pension fund. “We are seeking innovative and financially sound proposals that will benefit both the county and the surrounding communities,” stated a press release from the ISD. The Bethune Library site is particularly significant as its redevelopment could address longstanding needs in the Watts neighborhood; learn more about community development initiatives at the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The sale process will involve a competitive bidding process, with proposals evaluated based on financial viability, community benefit, and adherence to county regulations. Further details regarding the bidding process and property specifications can be found on the county’s procurement website here. Officials anticipate the sale will be completed by Spring 2025.
County officials stated they will carefully review all submitted proposals and engage with community stakeholders before finalizing any agreements.
