Vasile Nașcu, Renowned Romanian Sculptor, Passes Away at 76

Vasile Nașcu, a celebrated Romanian sculptor known for his influential contributions to modern art, has died at the age of 76. The announcement was made by his family and confirmed by cultural authorities in Romania. Nașcu’s function, which spanned over five decades, left a lasting mark on the country’s artistic landscape, blending traditional motifs with contemporary forms.

Born in 1948 in Chișinău, then part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, Nașcu studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest. He gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s for his public sculptures, many of which remain fixtures in Romanian cities and cultural institutions. His pieces often explored themes of identity, resilience and the human condition, earning him national recognition and numerous awards.

Throughout his career, Nașcu participated in major exhibitions across Europe, including shows in Paris, Milan, and Berlin. His sculptures were featured in prominent galleries and public spaces, contributing to Romania’s cultural diplomacy during the post-communist era. Colleagues remember him as a mentor to younger artists and a steadfast advocate for artistic freedom.

Nașcu is survived by his wife, two children, and several grandchildren. A private funeral service will be held in Bucharest, with a public memorial planned for later this month at the National Museum of Art of Romania. The museum has confirmed it will host a retrospective exhibition of his work beginning in June, celebrating his legacy and impact on Romanian sculpture.

His passing marks the end of an era for Romanian art, as Nașcu was one of the last surviving figures of a generation that helped redefine national artistic expression after decades of political constraint. Cultural officials have praised his dedication to preserving and evolving Romania’s artistic heritage.
