Astros Face Critical Offseason to Rebuild After Missing Playoffs
The Houston Astros are embarking on a crucial offseason, their first since 2017 without October baseball, as General Manager Dana Brown prepares to address significant roster gaps and strategic decisions starting at next week’s GM meetings in Las Vegas.
A primary concern for Brown is replacing the substantial innings lost from their pitching staff, with key contributors like Framber Valdez now a free agent and others sidelined by injury or trades. Valdez, a durable workhorse who has thrown 973 innings since 2020, is expected to command a lucrative contract that the Astros may be hesitant to match. The team is also navigating the departure of Ryan Gusto, traded to Miami, and the need to bolster depth beyond Cristian Javier and returning pitchers Hunter Brown and Colton Gordon. The Astros’ pitching woes are particularly concerning given the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball, where reliable starting pitching is at a premium.
Beyond pitching, the Astros must also determine the role of veteran Jose Altuve, who saw his offensive production dip last season despite a significant amount of time at designated hitter due to Yordan Alvarez’s absence. Altuve, who will turn 36 in May, slashed .265/.329/.442 in 2024, his lowest offensive output since 2013. The team will also consider potential trades involving players like Yainer Diaz, Jake Meyers, Bryan Abreu, and Jeremy Peña to address both payroll concerns and roster logjams, as detailed by MLB Trade Rumors. A potential reunion with Justin Verlander, who expressed “mutual interest” in returning to Houston earlier this year, is also being discussed.
Brown acknowledged last month the team will “probably be in the market, for sure, to trade for” a starting pitcher, but must also weigh the value of their current farm system. The Astros finished the 2024 season with an 88-74 record, falling short of a playoff berth and signaling a need for significant changes to remain competitive in the American League West. Brown and his staff will continue evaluating options and finalizing the overhauled coaching staff, including a potential addition of San Diego Padres hitting coach Victor Rodriguez, before making further decisions.
