Mediterranean Property Hotspots Revealed as British Buyers Seek Affordability
British homebuyers are increasingly turning to lesser-known areas of the Mediterranean to find affordable properties, as prices in traditional hotspots like Marbella and Mallorca continue to rise, according to insights shared today by presenters of the long-running Channel 4 series, A Place in the Sun.
Presenters identified several emerging locations offering value for money, including the Costa de Almería and Costa Tropical in Spain, Paphos in Cyprus, and even regions in Morocco and Italy. Craig Rowe, a presenter on the show, highlighted the Costa de Almería, stating, “Places like Mojácar offer really good value for money… It’s got a beautiful old Spanish pueblo and a long beach of golden sand.” A two-bedroom property in Mojácar is currently listed for £213,899. This shift reflects a broader trend of buyers seeking authentic experiences and lower costs of living, potentially revitalizing local economies in these areas.
Beyond Spain and Cyprus, opportunities are emerging in Italy’s Abruzzo region, where properties can be acquired for under £166,000, and in Morocco, with apartments in Casablanca available for around £345,000. Laura Hamilton, who has been with the show since 2012, noted the appeal of Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains, offering both skiing and beach access, and emphasized Italy’s new 7% flat tax regime for foreign retirees, a move designed to attract investment and residents to southern Italy. For those considering a move, understanding the local requirements for residency is crucial.
The increased interest in these alternative locations comes as established destinations face pricing pressures, with development driving up costs in areas like Estepona on the Costa del Sol and Mallorca in the Balearics. “It’s that people have been priced out of the market more than anything,” Hamilton explained. A Place In The Sun returns with a new series on Channel 4 on October 13th, and presenters anticipate continued demand for affordable Mediterranean properties as more buyers explore these under-the-radar destinations.
