Montgomery Duo Claims District 4 Girls Tennis Doubles Title
Montgomery’s Cali Barnes and Madisyn Miller defeated Hughesville’s Georgia Randall and Rebecca Roberts in a thrilling three-set match yesterday to win the District 4 girls tennis doubles tournament.
The match, held at the Central PA Tennis Center in South Williamsport, saw Barnes and Miller secure the victory with a final score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. After building a 5-1 lead in the third set, the Montgomery pair faced a strong comeback from Randall and Roberts, ultimately holding on to win after two crucial first serves from Miller. “With Madisyn serving, I had no doubt that we were going win that game,” Barnes said.
Montgomery coach Jesse Newcomer emphasized the importance of composure during the match, advising his players to “slow down…take some deep breaths and slow this set down a bit.” This advice proved effective as Barnes and Miller regained control after a brief lapse, demonstrating resilience and skill. This victory qualifies the winning team for the PIAA Class AA Tournament, offering a chance to compete on a state level. Both Barnes and Miller are relatively new to the sport, having played for only two and three years respectively, showcasing their rapid development and dedication.
Randall and Roberts will also advance to the PIAA Class AA Tournament, which begins on October 31 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association oversees high school sports in the state, ensuring fair competition and athletic development for student-athletes.
Officials stated both teams are expected to represent District 4 well at the state tournament.
