Bencic Claims Redemption, Wins Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo
Belinda Bencic defeated Linda Noskova 6-2, 6-3 today in Tokyo to win the Toray Pan Pacific Open, securing her tenth career title and avenging a loss in the final of the same tournament a decade prior.
The 28-year-old Bencic overcame a significant disparity in recent match play, having spent over five hours on court in the previous two rounds compared to Noskova’s minimal time due to opponent retirements and a walkover. Despite this, Bencic dominated the final, saving all ten break points she faced and capitalizing on her opponent’s 37 unforced errors. This victory elevates Bencic to No. 11 in the PIF WTA Rankings, putting her within reach of re-entering the top 10.
“It was wonderful playing in front of you guys,” Bencic said after the match. “The last time I won here was the Tokyo Olympics when it was an empty stadium, so it was a completely different atmosphere, but it was great to play in front of you guys. I love to play in Japan, so I’m super happy to finally win this tournament.” Bencic’s win marks her second title of the season, demonstrating a return to form after periods away from the WTA Tour. The Pan Pacific Open is a significant event on the WTA calendar, often attracting top players and serving as a key warm-up for larger tournaments.
In the doubles final, Timea Babos and Luisa Stefani defeated Anna Danilina and Alexsandra Krunic 6-1, 6-4, securing their fourth title of the season and a spot in the WTA Finals in Riyadh. Babos now has 29 WTA doubles titles, while Stefani claimed her 13th. Officials stated that both teams demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the week, culminating in a competitive and exciting final match.
