Israel, Hamas Exchange Remains of Soldiers and Palestinians Amid Ceasefire
Israel and Hamas militants completed another exchange of remains today, with Israel returning the bodies of 45 Palestinians and receiving the remains of three Israeli soldiers killed during the October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the ongoing conflict.
The Red Cross facilitated the transfer of the Palestinian remains to Gaza, where they were received at Nasser Hospital around noon, according to Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson Zaher al-Wahidi. Identification efforts are hampered by a shortage of DNA testing kits, with only 78 of the 270 Palestinian bodies returned so far having been identified; the ministry is posting photos online in hopes of family recognition. The returned Israeli soldiers were identified as Capt. Omer Neutra, an American-Israeli, Staff Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Col. Assaf Hamami, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. This exchange is part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire intended to secure the release of all remaining hostages.
The exchange occurs as a separate political scandal unfolds in Israel, with the arrest of Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, the military’s former legal chief, following her admission to leaking a video depicting the sexual assault of a Palestinian detainee. Her detention has been extended by 48 hours as investigations continue, and former chief military prosecutor Col. Matan Solomesh was also arrested. The detainee featured in the leaked video was released on October 13, according to military prosecutor documentation. Alongside the exchange, efforts are underway to increase humanitarian aid to Gaza, with the U.K. announcing an additional £6 million in support through the U.N. Population Fund. A vaccination campaign targeting approximately 40,000 Palestinian children under three is also scheduled to begin next week, addressing a critical need for preventative care amidst the ongoing crisis. The conflict began with a Hamas attack on Israel that killed around 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages being taken, and has since resulted in over 68,800 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry – figures that have been disputed by Israel. Officials say further exchanges are expected as part of the ceasefire agreement, with the ultimate goal of securing the release of the eight hostages still held in Gaza.
