Global AI Investment Fuels $3 Trillion Datacenter Buildout
A massive global investment in artificial intelligence is driving a projected $3 trillion expenditure on datacenters by 2028, as companies race to provide the infrastructure needed to power AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Veo.
The surge in AI investment has already seen significant market gains, with Nvidia becoming the first company to reach a $5 trillion valuation yesterday, and Microsoft and Apple achieving $4 trillion valuations. Restructuring at OpenAI has valued the company at $500 billion, potentially paving the way for a $1 trillion flotation next year. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported revenues of $100 billion in a single quarter, fueled by demand for its AI infrastructure. This expansion isn’t limited to tech giants; communities like Newport, Wales, are hoping to revitalize their economies by hosting these new facilities.
Microsoft is currently constructing a datacenter near Newport, on the site of a former radiator factory, a project described by Newport City Council leader Dimitri Batrouni as a chance to “embrace the future.” However, concerns remain about the sustainability of this spending spree, with four major AI players – Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft – expected to spend over $750 billion on AI-related capital expenditure over the next two years. Analysts at Morgan Stanley estimate that $1.5 trillion of this will need to come from sources like private credit, raising concerns about potential systemic risk to the global economy. “The providers of this debt are so eager to deploy capital into AI, that they may not be properly assessing the risks,” says Gil Luria, head of technology research at DA Davidson.
Despite these concerns, projects like the $500 billion Stargate venture in Texas, a collaboration between OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, and a similar project planned for North Tyneside in the UK, are moving forward. Work on an estimated 10GW of new datacenter capacity is expected to begin this year, requiring an additional $720 billion in grid spending, according to JLL. This rapid expansion of AI infrastructure represents a significant shift in global energy demands and could reshape regional economies. Microsoft officials stated that their Newport datacenter will serve a variety of purposes beyond AI, including general cloud services.
Officials say they are monitoring the market closely and expect continued investment in AI infrastructure over the coming years.
