East Timor Officially Joins ASEAN, Marking Bloc’s First Expansion in Decades
East Timor was officially admitted into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) today, a landmark moment for the young nation and the regional bloc.
The formal ceremony took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where East Timor’s flag was added to those of the existing ten member states. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao described the occasion as a “dream realized,” stating, “For the people of Timor Leste this is not only a dream realized, but a powerful affirmation of our journey — one marked by resilience, determination and hope.” This expansion is significant as it broadens ASEAN’s economic reach and influence in a strategically important region.
The admission comes after more than a decade of application and assessment, with East Timor gaining observer status in 2022. U.S. President Donald Trump, who arrived in Malaysia yesterday for his first Asian trip since returning to the White House, also participated in the signing of an expanded ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, brokered earlier this year. “There was a lot of killing. And then we got it stopped, very quickly,” Trump said before the agreement was signed. He also announced forthcoming economic and trade agreements with both Cambodia and Malaysia. Experts at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute note that while East Timor’s inclusion presents challenges regarding institutional capacity, it also brings fresh perspectives to the bloc.
With a GDP of approximately $2 billion, ASEAN membership provides East Timor with access to a combined economic community of 680 million people and a $3.8 trillion economy. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the current ASEAN chair, emphasized the accession “completes the ASEAN family,” while acknowledging the need to “pursue growth that is both resilient and fair.” East Timor’s economy, heavily reliant on dwindling oil and gas reserves, hopes to diversify through increased trade and investment opportunities facilitated by its new ASEAN membership; learn more about ASEAN’s economic goals on their official website.
Officials stated that sustained technical and financial support will be crucial to ensure East Timor’s full participation, but Prime Minister Gusmao expressed readiness to “learn, innovate and uphold good government” as the nation embarks on this “inspiring new chapter.”
